ADAPTIVE
RECREATION
MULTIPLE AGES
SPECIAL OLYMPICS:
The City of Downey through partnership with Special Olympics
Southern California provides team sports opportunities for individuals
with intellectual disabilities. Specially trained coaches and volunteers
work closely with athletes to help develop the skills and abilities needed
to play in several different sports. Coaches present the fundamentals
of each sports while teaching specific skill development. The mission
of Special Olympics Southern California is to provide year-round
sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type
sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them
continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate
courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and
friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the
community. The City of Downey is working hard alongside Special
Olympics to make this mission possible. City of Downey Special
Olympics is open to all athletes with intellectual disabilities.
In the Fall 2025 season we will be offering Softball and Soccer.
Softball: Tuesday
Soccer: Thursday
Young Athletes (2-7yrs): Thursday

ADAPTIVE RECREATION:
The City of Downey is proud to offer Adaptive Recreation activities and
events to our community. This year we are hosting monthly events to
promote our new programs. Adaptive Recreation is a great way for
individuals with special needs to be able to participate in activities.
As well as to connect socially with each other. Participants will work
closely with the Adaptive Recreation throughout the activities/events
and will be supervised during the following activities/events:
• September 13: Reptile Show
• October 24: Halloween Dance
• December 2: Craft Night
• January 9: Holiday Dance

FENTANYL & NARCAN
PRESENTATION
Date: Wednesday, September 17th
Time: 4pm-5pm
Location: Barbara J. Riley Community & Senior Center
Ages: 18+
Fee: FREE
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is providing a
Fentanyl & Response Overdose presentation with Narcan Training as
part of the initiative to prevent deaths due to opioid-related overdose
through the provision of free naloxone. Participants will learn the risk
of an overdose, and those close to them, how to prevent, recognize,
and respond to overdose using naloxone.
HANDS-ONLY CPR
Date: Wednesday, October 15th
Time: 4pm-5pm
Location: Barbara J. Riley Community & Senior Center
Ages: Any
Fee: FREE
The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health is offering free
trainings on Hands-Only CPR for community members. Hands-Only
CPR is a life-saving skill that increases the survival rate of a person in a
cardiac arrest emergency. The training will consist of a group session,
CPR training WITHOUT mouth-to-mouth breaths, no documents
required. **NOT A CPR CERTIFIED COURSE**
COPING WITH STRESS WORKSHOP
Date: Wednesday, November 5th, 12th,19th, & 26th
Time: 4pm-5pm
Location: Barbara J. Riley Community & Senior Center
Ages: 16+
Fee: FREE
This 4- week workshop offers participants an opportunity to learn
about stress and how to gain better control of it. Topics that will be
covered include: mind & body connection, tuning into your body,
tuning into your mind and improving communication skills. This
workshop is provided by Whittier Wellness Community.
** It is suggested that participants attend all scheduled meetings**
ZUMBA
Date: Wednesday, December 10th
Time: 5:30pm
Location: Barbara J. Riley Community & Senior Center
Cost: FREE
Enjoy a free Zumba session provided by The Whole Child. Health
Educators certified in group fitness Zumba will bring a high energy
class for all levels to enjoy.
