BOB DYLAN: A JEWISH LENS
The 1960s saw a surge of talented musicians, with Bob Dylan
standing out as a leading figure whose songwriting rose to
the level of serious literature, earning him the Nobel Prize in
Literature in 2016. Deeply influenced by his Jewish background,
Dylan’s lyrics often draw on Jewish tradition and biblical themes,
particularly the Hebrew prophets. These lectures explore the
Jewish elements in his work and seek to demonstrate the value a
Jewish perspective brings to the overall understanding of his art.
This course is taught using audio, video, text analysis, and group
discussion.

DEBBIE FRIEDMAN: FOLKSINGER AS
JEWISH FEMINIST REVOLUTIONARY
In the early 1970s, Debbie Friedman (1951-2011), a Jewish
summer camp and choir leader, transformed synagogue
music by blending traditional Hebrew and English lyrics with
contemporary folk-rock. Beginning in St. Paul and later in
Chicago, she introduced a joyful, accessible “summer camp” style
that resonated across generations. Challenging both musical
and gender norms, Friedman revolutionized Jewish worship
and left a lasting impact on modern Jewish practice. This lecture
offers a brief overview of her life and her musical and social
contributions.

MUSICAL THEATER MONDAYS
Musical Theater Mondays emphasize vocal technique, with a
focus on group numbers, solos, and duets. Attention is given to
the music of each piece while also working on the scenes from
which the songs originate. The class provides an opportunity to
refine singing skills and deepen the understanding of how the
music and dialogue work together to tell a story. This is a fantastic
opportunity for performers to build skills, gain confidence, and
experience the joy of musical theater in a supportive and creative
environment. (7 classes)
