FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 5TH – 11TH
The Placentia Fire and Life Safety Department is celebrating
this year's Fire Prevention Week, October 5th -11th, with
the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) theme
Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home.
Help us celebrate and spread the word about making smart
choices when it comes to buying, charging, and recycling
lithium-ion batteries.
Most electronics used in our homes every day, including most
rechargeable devices, are powered by lithium-ion batteries.
Lithium-ion batteries store a lot of energy in a small space
and can overheat, starting a fire or exploding if overcharged
or damaged. This year, we invite our community to learn
how to buy, charge, and recycle these batteries safely so
that we can all prevent fires in our homes.
When buying electronics, only purchase listed products.
Common approved listings include certification marks such
as UL, ETL, or CSA. These listings mean the product meets
important safety standards.
To charge devices safely, always use cables that came with
the product and follow the manufacturer's instructions.
If you need to purchase a new charger, make sure to get
one from the manufacturer or one that is manufacturer-
approved for the device. It's also important to charge
devices on a hard surface and unplug them when the battery
is fully charged.
Recycle batteries responsibly by taking them to a designated
battery recycling location or putting them in a local battery
recycling bin. Do not throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash
or household recycling bins because they could start a fire.
Lastly, stop using your device if the battery smells weird,
gets hot, makes popping noises, or changes shape or color. If
it is safe to do so, move the device away from anything that
can catch fire, move people away, and call 9-1-1.
FIRE AND LIFE SAFETY OPEN HOUSE
Join Placentia Fire and Life Safety as we kick off Fire
Prevention Week with an Open House! The community
is invited to visit our Fire Stations on Saturday, October
4th, from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to learn more about
this year's theme: "Charge Into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion
Batteries in Your Home." Meet your Placentia Firefighters
at both of our Stations, ask questions, tour the Stations,
and see the equipment and apparatus that we use when
we respond to calls.
