Tanuki Curry House:
A Taste of Japan in Signal Hill
Tanuki Curry House is serving up more than just Japanese comfort food, it’s sharing a family
story. Owner and chef Erwin Angeles credits his son, Victor, as the inspiration behind the
restaurant’s concept. What began as a father’s wish to share good food with his son has grown
into a welcoming spot where the community can savor the same flavors.
At the center of the menu is a curry that takes
24 hours to make. “We use S&B curry powder, the
same as in Japan, but we toast it. We caramelize
the onions, carrots, apples, and tomato paste.
We make it sing,” Angeles explains. The result is
a sauce that’s rich, hearty, and deeply satisfying,
served with rice, crispy cutlets, or steaming
bowls of udon.
Angeles also credits the business ecosystem within Signal Hill for helping bring Tanuki
Curry House to life. “We found the City of Signal Hill to be very business-friendly, extremely
accommodating and genuinely helpful. The small-town feel gives a sense of togetherness, like
they’ve got your back,” he says. Tanuki Curry House is proof that comfort food, family inspiration,
and community support can come together to create something truly special.
