Reducing Food Waste
Food waste is a growing issue that affects
both our environment and local
communities. With a few mindful habits, you
can help reduce waste while getting the
most out of your meals.
Tips to Reduce Waste at Home:
Store leftovers in airtight containers to keep
food fresh and prevent spoilage.
Plan creatively by turning leftovers into new
meals.
Freeze extras to extend shelf life and ensure
quick meals are always on hand.
Donate surplus food to local food banks or
soup kitchens when possible.
For Unavoidable Food Waste:
Place all food scraps in your green waste
cart using a clear or transparent plastic
bag that is securely tied.
Recycle or properly discard any packaging
materials to avoid contaminating the green
waste stream.
With a little planning and creativity, reducing
food waste becomes simple and makes a
big difference for your household and the
planet.
Household Hazardous Waste
Household hazardous waste, including
batteries, cleaners, paints, oils, and
lightbulbs, requires special handling and
cannot be disposed of in regular trash.
Improper disposal, especially of batteries,
poses fire risks. Residents should cover
battery terminals with non-conductive tape
before disposal. Walnut residents can place
small batteries in a clear ziplock bag on top
of their blue recycling cart for curbside
pickup. For other hazardous waste items,
contact (800)-CleanLA or visit Earth911.com
for proper disposal guidance.
