A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CITY: CONTINUING EXCURSION SERIES!
For the Fall 2025 session, the Day in the Life of a City series continues, which launched in the Fall of 2022. In this series, explore iconic
elements of Southern California cities. The trips focus on a city’s art, architecture, and culture. Checking out the city’s museums and historic
buildings is also a part of each excursion’s itinerary. Elements of fun and walkability (ex. Walking a city’s downtown or unique neighborhood)
are an added bonus. And of course, an enjoyable food experience is always a part of the day’s activities.
A DAY IN THE LIFE OF A CITY: POMONA
Most people, when asked “what comes to mind when you think of Pomona?” might reply, “the LA County
Fair” or “Cal Poly Pomona”. Ah, but there is so much more to this city. For starters, the city was named after
the Roman goddess of Fruitful Abundance, Pomona. It was settled in the 1830’s, and incorporated in 1888.
And, this city has many unique treasures to explore. A case in point is the first stop of this adventure, a visit to
the city’s American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA). It’s the largest of its kind in the United States.
The museum’s mission involves collecting and preserving significant ceramic achievements of the
world’s cultures, from ancient times to the present day. A docent acquaints the group with many of the
ceramic pieces in AMOCA’s permanent collection…some 13,000 works! Lunch is at El Merendero on
participant’s own tab. The last stop on this trip is the Phillips Mansion. It was originally home to Louis
Phillips, a rancher who became a successful land developer. It’s currently owned by the Historical
Society of Pomona Valley. Built in 1875 in the Second Empire architectural style, this mansion was
the first home in the Pomona Valley to have gas lighting. The docent takes the group on a tour of the
home’s unique elements, including its 16-foot-high ceilings, 6 fireplaces, and cherry maple woodwork.
Please wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a bottle of water, hat, and some snacks.
Transportation is included via the City Shuttle.
The shuttle departs from the Calabasas Senior Center, 300 Civic Center Way.
